The remote border town of Freixo de Espada à Cinta lies about 39 km southeast of Torre de Moncorvo and its skyline is dominated by the heptagonal shaped Torre do Galo (Cockerel’s Tower). Also known to the locals as the Torre do Relógio (Clock Tower), it was part of the castle rebuilt by King Dinis, after he founded the town in the 14th century. There are also parts of the old town walls around the parish church. The central façade of the tower bears the town’s old coat of arms and the view from the top is outstanding, particularly in spring when the almond trees are in blossom.
