One of São Miguel’s outstanding attractions is the much visited village of Furnas, located inland from the south-eastern coast. The village has a splendid botanical garden, the Terra Nostra Park, founded in the 18th century by the then American Consul Thomas Hickling. Amongst a wonderful variety of exhibits are magnificent centenary trees, exuberant vegetation from all over the world, small ponds, meandering paths and a pool with therapeutic warm and muddy waters. Since 1630 when a powerful eruption took place, this region boasts an amazing variety of volcanic activity.
