Furnas valley is crossed by two fast-flowing streams, one with cold water and the other with warm water coloured by iron in suspension. The landscape is dotted with typical water-mills. Of great natural beauty, the Vale das Furnas is a highlight of the Azores with its unique landscape endowed with relaxation and romanticism. The nature contains its own details demanding of attention, the yams growing abundantly on the banks of the hot stream and the obelisk erected on the orders of the Marquis of Praia e Monforte. The valley is the richest hydrological area of thermal water in Europe with over 30 water springs.
