Going into the interior of the island shows treasures not found closer to the coast. One of these treasures is to see the spectacle of hot steam emanating from numerous springs in spirals, spinning in the air and finally evaporating in lunar silence. One of the best places to view this is on the way towards the cave of Algar do Carvão at the sulphur fumaroles of Furnas do Enxofre, located almost in the geographic centre of the island at 600 m above sea level. The earlier in the morning you go, because of the lower temperatures, the more mystical the sight.
