Small boats can be hired from the jetty to explore the many reefs and marine grottoes on the island. The largest of these lies south of the fort and is known as Furado Grande, literally ‘large borehole’, which is 70 metres long from one side of the island to the other. It comes out in the beautiful Covo do Sonho (dream cove) which is framed by imposing red granite cliffs. The small boats pass through this tunnel and are an ideal way to appreciate the tranquil magic of the island with its clear waters, caves and weird rock formations.
