The funicular, which was inaugurated in July 1889, takes you on the 3 minute trip from the old quarter of Nazaré to Sitio, the original hilltop portion of town. It was one of the projects of Gustave Eiffel’s pupil, Raul Mesnier, who was also responsible for most of Lisbon’s installations. The cars take 40 passengers and travel 380 metres rising 110 metres. Initially steam engine driven, the system was changed in 1968 to become electrically operated. The cars were replaced by the latest, more comfortable, models in 2002.
