The Neo-Baroque Basilica of the Fátima Sanctuary has a 65 metre tower and an esplanade twice the size of that of St Peter’s in Rome. Although the first stone was laid in 1928, the consecration by Pope Pius XII did not take place until 1954. The Basilica has 15 altars and contains the tombs of all three visionaries. The stained glass windows by João de Sousa Araújo were completed in 1967; they represent scenes from the Apparitions, the Message of Fátima and also the life of the Virgin. Note the 1952 Italian organ with 12,000 pipes and 152 registers.
