Still privately owned by the Mascarenha family, this is one of the most beautiful residences in Lisbon. Built in the 17th century, its delightful rooms contain outstanding decorative tile work, frescoed panels and oil paintings. The famous Hall of Battles has been called the Sistine Chapel of tile work. The formal gardens are another highlight with fountains, statues and more examples of the finest tile work depicting religious, hunting and battle scenes. This palace is certainly one of the most important showpieces of Portuguese decorative art.
