The derivation of the name Freixo de Espada à Cinta, which translates as ‘ash tree of the girt sword’, has given rise to many explanations. The most colourful is that King Dinis, when founding the town in the 14th century, strapped his sword to an ash. Apart from the castle and the museum (see separate entries), the pillory is of particular interest and the Misericórdia Church is worth a visit. To the south of the town there is an excellent view from the top of the Penedo Durão and close by, the Salto de Saucelle dam on the River Douro.
