The elegant Freixo Bridge over the River Douro, on the east side of Porto, is upstream of the other city bridges. It carries the Auto-Estrada do Norte motorway, taking traffic from Porto south on the EO1. Designed by Professor António Reis and built by the balanced cantilever method, it was opened in September 1995 and has two four lane highways; the double deck width is 2x18 metres. The bridge has eight spans, the main being 150 metres, with 115 metre spans on each side the rest being minor. The overall length is 705 metres and the pier height is 30 metres.
