Frederico Augusto da Cunha Freitas lived in the 18th century residence, now restored, where the museum bearing his name is housed. He was a well respected solicitor in Funchal. The museum opened in 1988 and, whilst it contains a varied collection of objets d’art, it is particularly noted for its outstanding collection of ceramic glazed tiles. Other items include mugs, teapots, porcelain, ivory, religious sculpture, sacred art, furniture and paintings. With a dining table which is always laid, its well tended garden, and fresh flowers in vases, it gives the impression of a home rather than a museum.
