The former Bishops’ Palace is now home to the Museu de Francisco Tavares Proença Júnior, named after its founder. Originally a Gothic building, built between 1596 and 1598 by Nuno de Noronha, bishop of Guarda, it was remodelled in Baroque style in the 18th century. The museum opened in 1971 and has more than 5,000 wide-ranging exhibits including archaeological finds, tapestries, furniture, coins, armour Portuguese paintings and primitive art. Castelo Branco is famous for its embroidered linen and in particular its colchas or bedspreads. An important part of the museum is devoted to this art.
