The cove of Beliche marks the point between the southern and western sides of the country. At one end stands the Fortress of Beliche. This centuries-old fort was, built at the orders of Prince Henry the Navigator. The shield of arms of King Sebastião from the16th century can still be seen on the entrance gate. Next to the fort is the tiny Chapel of Santa Catarina. This is cubic in shape, in the manner of the cells of ascetics. Sadly, due to cliff erosion, the grounds are considered dangerous, so it is advised to stay well back from the cliff’s edge.
