The mediaeval fortifications of Monsaraz date from the 7th century and consist of fortified walls and ramparts. The main fortress has a trapezoid shape flanked by four square towers. As far as the town’s architectural heritage is concerned, the highlights are the mediaeval castle and keep and the former court building, which was built between the fourteenth and the sixteenth centuries. From the top of the keep, there is an outstanding panoramic view over the surrounding Portuguese and Spanish countryside.
