The fortress consists of two polygonal forts linked by the Portas do Meio and dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. The forts were designed according to principles of the distinguished French military engineer Sébastien le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707). The fortification has four gates the Porta do Santiago (or Porta do Sol), Porta de Gaviana (a Gothic arch), Porta da Fonte da Vila and Porta da Coroada. It also has twelve ramparts. Due to its proximity to Spain, it was a key factor in the Portuguese defence of the North. There are fine views across the River Minho to Spain.
