Built in the 16th century as a result of the renewed North Africa campaign (1557-1578) during the reign of King Sebastiao, the Forte do Rato was constructed at the mouth of the Gilão River estuary. Its main purpose was to protect Tavira from the aggressive North African pirates who were raiding coastal ports along the Algarve. To ensure its fitness to continue defending the port of Tavira, the Forte do Rato was remodelled during the Restoration War (1640-1668). The remains of the fort stand on the eastern side of Tavira close to the salt pans and Tuna Fishing Museum.
