The imposing fortress (Forte do Pessegueiro) overlooking the Atlantic Ocean on the coast of Porto Covo has, together with the smaller fortress on the Ilha do Pessegueiro, been classified as a national monument since 1957. In the ruins of this, the mainland fortress, which was started in the 16th century and altered in the 17th, there are two ramparts in excellent condition and the moat entrance is still accessible. In the main section of the fort are the barracks and a 17th chapel.
