The Forte de São João da Barra stands in the heart of the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve. It was built in the 17th century to defend the port of Tavira during a particularly turbulent period of history when the coastal towns were frequently under attack from Africa. That era has now passed, but its imposing stone walls remain along with the square of arms, well and stone water tank. Although the fort has been converted into a private hotel, it is well worth a visit to see this beautifully preserved and interesting example of border fortification.
