At one end of Praia da Rocha stands the Fortress of St. Catherine of Ribamar which, together with the Fort of St. John of Arade across the river in Ferragudo, constituted Portimão’s defenses against attack by sea. Rectangular in shape, and with a turret on each corner, the fort is south of the harbour, high on a sheer cliff. In an excellent strategic position, it commanded the sea, river, beaches and cliffs. Inside is a small chapel, dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria, which still retains its Gothic doorway intact. This beautiful spot is a great place to be at sunset.
