The Forte de Milfontes, also known as the Forte de São Clemente, overlooks the river mouth of the Mira, which it has guarded for four hundred years. From its secure rocky pedestal, the fort opens onto a draw-bridge. The moat today is filled with flowers, guarding ivy covered walls and the inside has the appearance of a manor-house, but it was once an important fortress protecting Odemira from attack by pirates and other adventurers. The fort was constructed under the plans drawn up by Alexandre Massai (16-17C).
