Located between the beaches of Almádena and Boca do Rio, on a deserted stretch of coastline, are the ruins of a fort built at the command of King Joăo III in the 16th century. This was one of several coastal defence fortresses erected along the Algarve. The strategic importance of Cape St Vincent, and the need to protect the local population from marauding pirates, led to their construction. The Forte de Almádena at Barrancăo gives a good idea of how difficult protecting the area must have been in those uncertain times. Standing next to the fort offers magnificent views out to sea.
