This buttressed fortress was built in the 15th century by Prince Henry the Navigator, who died here in 1460. The fortress endowed Sagres with a unique role in the history of Portugal, coupling it with the Portuguese discoveries. A gigantic mariners’ compass, measuring more than 40 metres in diameter, has managed to withstand the passage of time. The fort was attacked by Francis Drake in 1587, when King Filipe III of Spain was also King of Portugal. The site was renovated during the 1990s, by João Carreira, and now boasts an exhibitions area, multimedia centre, shops and cafeteria.
