The original fort was built in 1167 on the orders of D. Alfonso Enriques, the founder of modern Portugal, to protect the area from attack by Moors. The bulwarked fortifications were added during the War of Restoration against the Spanish, enclosing the Fortress and moving the nation’s line of defence much closer to the River Guadiana, a natural border between Portugal and Spain. The surviving remnants of the Fortress include ruins of the former Chamber and Senate House and two churches.
