The squat fort of Nossa Senhora da Penha de França, popularly known as the Fortaleza Ponta da Bandeira, guards the entrance to Lagos harbour. Constructed at the end of the 17th century to defend the city from attack, the fort constitutes one of the best-preserved examples of this type of military installation in the Ancient Kingdom of the Algarve. Today the fort is used for exhibitions and other cultural activities, and provides magnificent views of Lagos bay from the battlements.
