Together with the fortress of Santa Catarina on the opposite bank of the river, the Fort of São João de Arade defended the Arade estuary. Initially a lookout tower in the 15th century, it was extended in the 17th and 18th centuries. On the initiative of the poet, Coelho Carvalho, it was turned into a home at the beginning of the 20th century, and it owes its current romantic appearance to this fact. It is now private property, but can be viewed from the beaches on either side and from across the river.
