Formosa Beach is ten minutes drive from the city centre and is also known as Baia Formosa. Probably the largest beach in Madeira, it consists of three small black sand beaches and a large pebbled beach. Blue flag classified, there are lifeguards on duty and swimmers are also protected against motor boats by a line of buoys. At the eastern end there are semi-artificial rock pools. Facilities include restaurants, bars and cafes, a children’s playground, a medical centre and parking. There are sports activities both on the beach and in the water.
