The original palace was built in the late 17th and early 18th centuries for the bishops of the Algarve as a place of refuge from the summer heat. The building underwent several modifications in the 19th and 20th centuries, which considerably altered its structure. The remains of the original palace were incorporated within the current building. The Episcopal Palace Gardens are worthy of a visit in their own right. Standing almost opposite the palace is a baroque vaulted fountain with eight spouts.
