The village of Fontinhas is found at the north-eastern foot of the Serra do Cume. This is considered by many to be the prettiest village on the island. It derives its name from the numerous springs originating here. One of the attractions is the Church of Nossa Senhora da Pene. Originally built in the 16th century the church was profoundly altered in the 19th century. Its high altar, carved and gilded woodwork and decorative azuelo tiles make the interior well worth visiting. Close by is an imperio of the Holy Ghost dating from the 19th century.
