Flamengos is the only village located in the inner part of the island, and owes its name to the Flemish settlers who settled there due to the presence of a stream, straight after the discovery of Faial. There are several bridges crossing the stream, including the Bridge of Flamengos, built in 1902. Standing out from the rest of the buildings is the Church of Our Lady of Light, from 1940, built two years after the fire that destroyed the previous one dating from 1607, which had in turn replaced the initial chapel from the 15th century to which the English set fire in 1597.
