The fountain of figs is one of the few examples of public works Gothic architecture still remaining in Portugal. It dates from the 13/14th centuries and consists of three ogival arches and columns with a ribbed dome roof, integrated into the defensive wall of the city. The front is decorated with both royal and municipal coats of arms. Situated strategically on the road that led into the city, it is often referred to in early documents. The original fig trees have long since been replaced but it remains a delightful place of rest.
