The picturesque Figueiró dos Vinhos is located about 32 km southeast of Penela. The St John the Baptist church is a National Monument and has an attractive Renaissance portal, a 13th century burial vault and an altarpiece with a 1904 panel of the Baptism of Christ by the naturalist painter José Malhoa (1855-1937). Malhoa lived here from 1898 until his death. Nearby are the church and part of the cloister of a former Carmelite convent and the Torre da Cadeia Comarcã, a stone tower dating from 1506. There is good fishing in the Alge Stream which leads to the River Zêzere.
