Only the church remains of the former Cistercian convent of Fiães, located in a beautiful setting approximately 7 km southeast of Melgaço. Philippa of Lancaster stayed in the convent when she came from England to marry King João I. The church was extensively altered in the 17th and 18th centuries, but the four archivolt entrance door, the chancel and outer walls of the naves are original. The upper part of the façade, rebuilt in the 17th century, has statues of the founder of the Cistercian Order St Bernard, St Benedict and Our lady of the Assumption. Above is the Order’s coat of arms.
