The Ferreiros Tower (the keep) and the two gates, the Porta d´El Rei and the Porta da Erva, are virtually the only tangible signs of what was an important medieval bastion. The keep, located on the east wall, is a National Monument and popular with visitors. Security was guaranteed by three internal doors, one of which is a portcullis, one of the few in Portugal. The 66 step climb to the top of the tower is rewarded by a splendid panoramic view of the region. There is also an altar with a permanently lit lamp and fresh flowers.
