José Maria Ferreira de Castro (1898-1974) was a writer, journalist and fierce opponent of the Salazar regime. Emigrating to Brazil when only 12, he worked on a rubber plantation for four years, the inspiration for his most famous book ‘A Selva’ (The Forest), made into a film in 2002. Cold Land (1992) and Eternity (1995) were also made into films. Returning to Portugal in 1919 he became a journalist and well known for his travel literature, including ‘A Volta a Mundo’ recounting his travels around the world. The museum includes the writer’s workroom, first editions manuscripts letters and other literary items.
