As the city developed, the original town wall became obsolete and in 1336 King Afonso IV (1325-1357) decided a new wall should be built. This was completed in 1376, during the reign of King Ferdinand I (1367-1383) and named after him. The wall, about 9 metres high had battlements, four portals and was reinforced by many turrets and square towers. Today the only sections which can be seen are the São João Novo and the Camina Nova (or Santa Clara) sections. The latter was restored in the 1920s and is close to the King Luis I bridge and the Guindais funicular.
