The curious lighthouse at the extremity of Cape St Vincent is an updated version of the beacon that the Bishop of the Algarve Fernando Coutinho had built for the safety of shipping in 1515. This world-renowned lighthouse directs hundreds of ships through the Cape to safety every year. The surrounding cliffs are a majestic sight against the commanding Atlantic Ocean. Cabo do São Vicente has been the scene of many major sea battles. In 1693 the French admiral Tourville defeated an Anglo-Dutch fleet. In 1780 Rodney inflicted a similar loss on the Spanish and Nelson and Jarvis defeated another Spanish fleet in 1797.
