Faro was first developed during the Roman period, when it was known as Civitas Ossobonensis. Many archaeological finds can be seen in the Infante D. Henrique Archaeological Museum, and the Milreu Ruins. In the 9th century, the town was renamed Saint Mary Ibn Harun. Faro returned to Christian rule in 1249, during the reign of Afonso III. It became a city in 1540 and many of the city’s religious monuments date from that period. In the 19th century Faro became an important city, with many palaces being built both in town and on the outskirts, including the stunning Palace of Estói.
