Located about 7 km southwest of Barcelos are the ruins of the Faria Castle and an adjacent archaeological station. Excavations carried out from time to time have uncovered material confirming habitation in the Bronze and Iron ages, the Roman era and the Middle Ages. The castle structures uncovered include remains dating from the reign of Afonso Henriques (1139-1185) and the castle keep, as well as fortress walls and other defensive structures from the reign of King Fernando (1367-1383). A further keep dates from the reign of King Dinis (1279-1325). The castle stones were eventually used in the construction of the nearby Franqueira Convent.
