Europe’s westernmost village is Fajã Grande. Located at the foot of a steep cliff, the village gets very lively during the summer months, as it boasts a small harbour and a seawater pool. Fajã Grande has very attractive picnic and sunbathing areas and it is said to have the most beautiful sunsets in the Azores. During the 18th century the Fajã Grande was the second biggest village on the island. Its sheltered harbour was protected by four forts, of which only some stones remain. The village also provides great views of the island’s steep, northwest coast containing several imposing waterfalls.
