There are many fajãs along the coast, but the best for birds is the Fajã dos Cubres. The fajã is flat lowland with a small freshwater lagoon-like lake below steep almost vertical cliffs. There are refuges for ducks, herons and waders, and the rarity list is long, including species like Little Blue and Great Blue Heron. The fajã is on the north coast just opposite Calheta. You can easily reach Fajã dos Cubres by car and, for anyone interested in nature, this should not be overlooked.
