West of the town of Lajes, marking the centre of the south coast, you will find the Fajã de Lopo Vaz, the island’s largest and most beautiful beach. This beach is blessed with dark sand and the magnificent coastal strip was one of the first areas to be settled. This beach is popular with locals and tourists alike and has excellent support facilities. Due to the region’s special microclimate bananas, figs, grapes and pineapples are cultivated in the surrounding area, adding to its interest.
