Fajãs are formed from the collapse of cliffs or the oozing of lava from the cones of volcanoes. Seen from above they have the appearance of flat surfaces on the sea. The fajã of the Caldeira do Santo Cristo is in the Ribeira Seca area and it is a protected nature reserve where you can find an underground cave and a lagoon. It should be mentioned that the lagoon of the Caldeira de Santo Cristo is the only place in the Azores where clams are to be found, and they are said to be truly delicious ones.
