The Faculty of Sciences building was originally designed by José da Costa Silva in 1803, but the design was altered in 1807 by architect Carlos da Cruz Amarante (1748- 1815). Built for the Royal Academy of the Navy and Commerce, it became the Polytechnic Academy and then, in 1911, the Faculty of Sciences building; construction took most of the 19th century. Classical in style, the building contains three museum areas, the Archaeology and Pre-History Hall, the Mineralogy Hall and Zoology Hall. Other interesting features are the paintings of Veloso Salgado and the bronze bust of Professor Gomes Teixeira.
