Housed in the former Archbishop’s Palace, a remodelled 16th century building, the Evora museum features ancient artefacts and art from the height of the Portuguese Empire. Notable items include the 15th century ‘Holy Virgin with Child’ by Alvaro Pires and the two cenotaphs by Nicolas Chanterène for Dom Álvares de Costa and Dom Afonso de Portugal. Many of the exhibits are from the personal collection of Archbishop D. Frei Manuel do Cenáculo. Medieval and Baroque jewellery, ceramics and thirteen paintings in the Flemish altarpiece from the Évora cathedral are also on display.
