Opposite the Estrela Basilica, these lovely gardens are Lisbon’s oldest and most popular. Laid out in various designs between 1842 and 1852, they feature an artificial grotto, ponds, water birds, fountains and a band stand. There is also a pond-side café. At one end is the English cemetery dating from 1717, where the novelist Henry Fielding of Tom Jones fame is buried. He died in 1754 and a monument to him was erected in 1830. If you wish to enter, ring the bell.
