Claimed to be the largest in Europe, the Estoril Casino is set in magnificent gardens and offers a great deal more than just its gaming facilities. There is, for instance, a gallery where a variety of art exhibitions are held, particularly focusing on modern sculpture and painting, and nightly cabaret and variety shows in a sophisticated atmosphere. During World War II the casino was said to be a gathering place for espionage agents and it was the inspiration for Ian Fleming’s James Bond book ‘Casino Royale’.
