The small town of Espinhal is located about 5.5 km southeast of Penela and its interesting parish church, which is dedicated to St Sebastian, was built in the second half of the 15th century. The main chapel has a half barrel vault roof, whilst the side chapels have corbelled domes and Renaissance local stone retables. The three aisles of the church are separated by Ionic columns. An outstanding feature is the Baroque painting of the Appearance of Christ to the Virgin, which is over the triumphal arch.
