About 20km west of Évora and 2km from the village of Santiago de Escoural is the only known cave-dwelling in Portugal to have wall paintings and engravings from the Upper Paleolithic period. It was discovered during quarrying operations in April 1963 and classified as a National Monument in October of the same year. Taken over by the state in 1998 and opened to the public, there is a reception and study centre in Santiago do Escoural, which visitors are recommended to visit before going to the cave. This visit can be combined with the Cromlech of Almendres.
