The Ermida de São Pedro in Lajes do Pico has a special place in the history of the island of Pico. This chapel was built as an act of thanksgiving by the first settlers. The settlers landed in 1460 and the church dates from only slightly later in the 15th century. It is a small whitewashed chapel at the eastern exit of the town and still retains much of its primitive appeal. It has, however, been renovated many times in the intervening centuries.
