Following the Rua da República beyond the Jardim Público will bring visitors to a monument of Sao Bras. This stunning memorial, topped by an angel, was erected to commemorate the soldiers of Évora who fell in the First World War. Overlooking this is the magnificent Ermida de Sao Bras. Dedicated to St Blaise, it was built like a fortress in a Late Gothic style showing distinct Moorish influence. It was erected in 1485 in thanksgiving after the town survived the plague. The flat roof is crenellated like a castle and flanked by six conical pinnacles along each side. The inside is very plain compared to the fairytale exterior.
